    An interesting note regarding stainless steel...


    Almost any stainless steel that you can buy has been rolled, machined and/or manipulated with carbon or tempered steel implements. This means that, in general, all of the stainless steel that you will ever buy off the shelf or re-manufacture will have an appreciable amount of steel worked into its surface. This surface contamintation can be removed by either Electropolishing or Passivating.



    Use passivation/pickling to expose sub-standard metal compositions and manufacturing errors

    An over looked benefit to passivating and pickling is the ability for it to expose sub-standard metal compositions and errors in manufacturing

    • Case study #1: A marine supply company brought 304 stainless steel caribiners for passivation and electropolishing to increase corrosion resistance and aesthetic appeal in a marine environment. We also use these parts to secure and hang other parts in our passivation tank. Upon post treatment inspection it was observed that over 50% of each part had been dissolved/etched away within the standard treatment time. Upon further inquiries and testing it was discovered that the parts were from a new  lower priced overseas manufacturer and the composition of the "questionable" 304 stainless steel was sub-standard. Upon further testing the parts failed under less load than comparable pieces from other manufacturers. After informing the customer this new manufacturer was dropped and future potential part failures were avoided.


    • Case Study #2: 80 gallon 304 stainless steel heat exchange tank was passivated inside and out to remove weld scale and increase overall corrosion resistance, life, and peformance. Upon post treatment inspection it was observed that the internal 90 degree elbows welded to the exchange coil had dissoved between 20-90%. Upon further enquiries it was discovered that the metal composition was sub-standard. After informing the customer, future supplies of elbows are now gauranteed by the supplier and pre-mature part failing is avoided. 

    Use Electropolishing to Expose manufacturing errors and inconsistancies

    An over looked benefit to electropolishing is its ability to exposes errors and inconsistancies during part manufacturing. (click here for pictures!)

    • Case study #1: 316 stainless steel marine exhaust manifold for yacht was electropolished to remove weld-scale and increase overall corrosion resistance and life of part. Upon post inspection of part it was observed that a main weld was created using mild steel filler rod. This was reported back to customer and a very expensive remove/repair/replace situation was avoided due to the part surely failing. Not to mention the potential legal liability of the part manufacturer.


    • Case study #2: Used 304 stainless steel linked conveyor belt for food manufacturing facility to be cleaned and re-installed.Upon post inspection of part it was observed that the metal rods used within the links of the conveyor belt were constructed of mild carbon steel. The conveyor was specified as "all 304 stainless steel construction" This was reported back to customer and rods were replaced by manufacturer with the correct grade. A potential future unsafe food condition and associated liabilites were avoided.
